Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to Map to a non-default PostScript font when exporting to EPS or PDF or printing with PostScript. When exporting to EPS or PDF or printing with the PostScript printer engine, the fonts used to PostScript fonts on the system can be mapped to ensure font quality.

Procedure

Font mapping works the same for exporting to EPS and PDF and printing with the PostScript printer engine.

  1. If users are exporting to EPS or PDF, click File / Export Map. If users are printing with the PostScript printer engine, click File / Print.
  2. If users are exporting to EPS or PDF, click the Save as type dropdown list and select the appropriate export format. Click Options and click on the Font tab. If users are printing with the PostScript printer engine, click Setup. On the Setup dialog, click the printer Name dropdown list and select the PostScript printer to print to, then click the Printer Engine dropdown list and select PostScript printer. Click OK. Back in the Print dialog, under Printer Engine click Properties and then click on the Fonts tab.
  3. From this point, the operation to substitute fonts works the same for both exporting to PDF or EPS and printing with the PostScript printer engine.

Scroll through the font list and find the TrueType font to map to the non-standard PostScript Type1 font. For example, TrueType font 'Arial Narrow' which is set to 'Download characters used'.
  4. Click on 'Download characters used'. This is now both a drop down list and where the Type1 font can be typed.

For example, to match Arial Narrow to a Type1 font, type in 'Helvetica-Narrow'.

    Note:
Remember, the font must be installed on the system. Include this font along with the map document and data when it is shared.

  5. Click OK to save.
  6. Optionally, check the 'Apply font mapping to current print job/export only' box. If this box is not checked, then the mapping is saved to the registry and used every time.
