Limit the results of public surveys to hide potential confidential information entered into the survey

Summary

ArcGIS Survey123 surveys available to the public may contain confidential or sensitive information that may not be appropriate for public viewing. ArcGIS Survey123 can limit the viewing of the entire survey responses by only displaying a portion of it. This article highlights the workflow on how to hide confidential information.

Procedure

  1. Share the ArcGIS Survey123 survey and results to the public. Refer to ArcGIS Survey123: Share survey results and ArcGIS Survey123: Share survey for more information.
  2. Copy the survey URL links in ArcGIS Online.
    1. In ArcGIS Online, click the drop-down arrow under the <SurveyName_results> hosted feature layer. In this example, Farm_Laif_results is used. Click View item details.

  1. In the <SurveyName_results> page, scroll down and copy the URL link.
  1. Paste the survey URL link to the submission_column in ArcGIS Survey123 Connect.
    1. Open the survey in ArcGIS Survey123 Connect.
    2. Click XLSForm to open the Excel file of the survey.

  1. In the Excel file, click the settings tab, and insert the survey name into the form_title and form_id columns. In this example, 'Farm_Laif' is used.
  2. Paste the URL link copied in Step 2b to theĀ submission_url column. Save the Excel file and republish the survey.

  1. Update the view details of the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online.
    1. In ArcGIS Online, open the item details page of the hosted feature layer.
    2. On the <SurveyName_results> page, click Settings.
    3. Scroll to Feature layer (hosted, view). Click Update View.

  1. On the Update View page, under Layers, select the desired hosted feature layers. Click Next.
  2. Under Included layers, click the desired layer. In this example, the layer 'Farm Laif' is used.
  3. Under Layer definitions, expand Fields.
  4. Click Select fields and select the data to hide. This example hides the question, 'Are you secretly a sheep?'.
  5. Click Done.
