Summary
ArcGIS Pro can be authorized and started with a Named User license from an ArcGIS Enterprise portal. This article describes how to authorize and start ArcGIS Pro with a Named User license from Portal for ArcGIS .
Note:
The beginning of the workflow includes authorizing and importing the licenses in License Manager, otherwise known as the License Server Manager. This workflow is for Enterprise versions 11.3 and earlier. Beginning at Enterprise version 11.4, the License Manager component is no longer necessary. For Portals 11.4 or newer, skip to the step "Authorize the license file in the Enterprise portal".
Procedure
Note:
A license file is necessary to complete this workflow.
Authorize the license file in ArcGIS License Manager or License Server Administrator
- Ensure the license file is downloaded on the machine that hosts the License Manager (or License Server Administrator).
- Open the License Manager (or License Server Administrator).
- Click the Authorization folder.
- Choose Named User in Version.
- Click Authorize Now.

- Choose I have received an authorization file and am now ready to finish the authorization process, and browse for the authorization file
- The license file should be a .json file.

- Click Next.
- A pop up message Named user licenses applied appears.

- Click the ‘Availability’ folder in the License Manager to check the licenses have been updated
- It may be necessary to change Concurrent Use to Named User in the top right corner.
- Click OK.
Authorize the license file in the Enterprise portal
- Open a browser and navigate to the Portal home.
- Click Licenses under the Organization page.
- Click Import Licenses button in the left hand corner.

- Browse for the license file (.json file).
- Click Import.

- A message pops up if you are replacing existing licenses.
- A message pops up about the import being successful.
- The licenses are now available.
Add licenses to a user in Portal
- Navigate to Members under the Organization tab.
- Click the ellipsis (…).
- Click Manage add-on licenses.

- Check necessary licenses.
- Click Save.

Authorize the license ArcGIS Pro
- Open ArcGIS Pro.
- Click Configure your licensing options.
- Ensure License Type is set to Named User License.
- Choose the ArcGIS Enterprise option.
- Add the Portal URL.

- Click OK.
- You may be asked to sign in with your credentials.
Note:
It may be necessary to restart ArcGIS Pro for the license changes to take effect.
