HOW TO

Include images in feature reports when using the Feature Report widget in ArcGIS Experience Builder

Summary

There are a few known limitations to including images in Survey123 Feature Reports when using the Feature Report widget in ArcGIS Experience Builder. One scenario is after setting up and running the feature report via the Feature Report widget, the report does not display any attachments.

Another known behavior is seeing the following error message when attempting to upload a new template to the Feature Report widget in ArcGIS Experience Builder:

"Failed to parse '${<field_name> | size:460:0}' since '<field_name>' cannot be found in the current parsing scope"

Cause

If the feature report does not display any attachments, the syntax in the sample template only outputs the size of the attachment rather than the attachment itself. To include the actual attachment in the generated report, replace the original syntax with ${$attachment}.

The error message is due to the image question in ArcGIS Survey123 using the feature layer's attachment capability, relying on the attachment's typeKeywords to link the image to the question. In this case, the image exists only in the survey definition and not as a field in the feature layer, which is why the image cannot be found in the parsing scope.

Procedure

Ensure that your report appears how you would like it to in Survey123 Web App

Refer to these resources if your attachments are not appearing in the Survey123 Web App:

There are two options to connect the Survey data to the Feature Report Widget. You can connect directly to the survey with the Work with survey option. If this is not available, you can also select the Work with feature layer option. The workflows differ slightly between these two options. Both options still require the map widget to be configured.

If you choose Work with survey option in the Feature Report Widget

  1. In the Feature Report widget under the Content tab and below Source click Select data.
    • Click Add new data.
  2. Under the Add data section, click Layers.

  1. Select the Feature Service for your survey (this is not the _results or _form feature service for the survey).
    • Select Done.
  2. The feature service name now appears under the Select Data pane. Click the Plus sign next to the feature service name and select the survey that appears below it.

  • The Source is now connected. Make sure the Selected features option is showing underneath the survey. This allows you to select a point from the map and then print the feature report with that record's information

  1. Ensure that the Work with survey option is selected.
  2. Click + New template.
    1. Choose Select existing template.
    2. Use the drop-down to see that the correct template is connected to the survey.
    3. Select the feature report template and click Save. The report now appears under + New template.

  • You should now be able to select a record from the map and it appears in the feature report widget.
Note:
If you do not have a location question in your survey, or multiple records are recorded for the same spot, then you will need to add a way to filter the records for the one you need in the report. One way to do this is to add a filter widget and connect it to the map widget by adding an action.

If you choose Work with feature layer option in the Feature Report Widget

Configure the feature report widget:

  1. Under the Content tab, below Source, click Select data.
  2. Click Add new data.
  3. Under the Add data section, click Layers.

  1. Select the Feature Service for your survey (this is not the _results or _form feature service for the survey).
    • Click Done.
  2. The feature service name now appears under the Select Data pane. Click the Plus sign next to the feature service name and select the survey that appears below it.

  • The Source is now connected. Make sure the Selected features option is showing underneath the survey. This allows you to select a point from the map and then print the feature report with that record's information.

  1. Ensure that the Work with feature layer option is selected
  2. Click + New template.
  3. Select Upload new template.
  4. Choose Select file and upload the feature report from your computer.

  • When the syntax has been checked you can select Save. If you receive a Failed to save template error, change the name of the document and try to upload it again.

Configure the map widget

  1. Under the Content tab, below Source click Select map.
    • Click Add new data.
  2. Under the Add data section, Web Map should be selected.
    • Select the web map with the feature layer for the survey.

If you do not already have a map with the survey's feature layer saved to your content in ArcGIS Online, you will need to create one.

  1. Click the Action tab under the Map pane.
    1. Make sure Message Action is selected.
    2. Select Add a trigger.
    3. Select Record selection changes.
    4. Select Data.
    5. Select Select data records.
    6. Under Trigger data click Select data and choose the web map data source.
    7. Under Action data click Select data and choose the data source that is connected to the feature report widget (the survey feature layer).
    8. Toggle off the Trigger / action connection.

  • You should now be able to select a record from the map and it appears in the feature report widget!
Note:
If you do not have a location question in your survey, or multiple records are recorded for the same spot, then you will need to add a way to filter the records for the one you need in the report. One way to do this is to add a filter widget and connect it to the map widget by adding an action.
