HOW TO

Find out what device was used to take an image in ArcGIS Field Maps

Last Published: July 11, 2025

Summary

When working with data collected with ArcGIS Field Maps, it may be necessary to know what device was used to take an image. This kind of information is captured in image EXIF metadata. EXIF metadata is used by the browser to size images for viewing in applications such as Map Viewer.

EXIF metadata is mainly for JPEG and TIFF files, though some PNGs may also include EXIF metadata. It includes information on the image format, the time the image was taken, the device used to capture the image, and the camera settings. EXIF tags can also record the geographic locations of images on GPS-enabled devices.

Procedure

To look at the EXIF metadata of an image do the following:

  1. Save the image to your desktop as a JPEG.
  2. In the file explorer, right-click the image and select Properties.
  3. Navigate to the Details tab and scroll down to Camera.
  4. In this section are the specifications and settings of the device used to capture the image.

This workflow may also be used on images collected outside of ArcGIS Field Maps, however not all information may be present in the EXIF metadata.
