HOW TO

Ensure a utility network is fully 3D-enabled

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Depending on the version of ArcGIS Pro used when the utility network is initially created, it may not have full 3D capabilities for viewing dirty areas and error features. This impacts the viewing capabilities of dirty areas and error features for editing network features that store Z-values.

To clarify:

  • Utility networks created or upgraded from ArcGIS Pro 2.1 are not fully 3D-enabled.
  • Utility networks created using ArcGIS 2.2 and higher are fully 3D-enabled.

Procedure

Inspect the Network Properties

View the Network Properties tab of the utility network layer properties to determine the version of ArcGIS Pro used when the utility network was created, and whether the utility network configuration and data must be migrated to the latest version. See Utility network layer properties for more information.

If the network is created at 2.2 or later, no further action is required.

Utility networks created using ArcGIS Pro 2.1 have 2D dirty areas and error features. It is recommended to migrate the utility network to take advantage of full 3D capabilities.

Note:
There are differences in creating a new utility network at ArcGIS Pro 2.2 compared to upgrading an existing utility network created at ArcGIS Pro 2.1. The Upgrade Dataset tool is used to upgrade an existing utility network schema to match the ArcGIS Pro client version, but the dirty areas and error features' spatial reference cannot be Z-enabled as part of the upgrade
Migrate an existing utility network
The Utility Network Package Tools can be used to migrate an existing utility network configuration to a new utility network created in ArcGIS Pro 2.2 or higher. An asset package can be created from an established utility network and applied against a staged utility network created in a geodatabase created using ArcGIS Pro 2.2 or higher. Asset packages also support cross-database platform use.

Workflow steps:
  1. Install the latest version of ArcGIS Pro (ArcGIS Pro 2.2 or higher).
  2. Use the Export Asset Package tool to export the existing utility network configuration and data to an asset package. Ensure that all user versions have been reconciled and posted to the DEFAULT version prior to exporting as an asset package.
  3. Delete the existing feature dataset that contains the utility network.
  4. Upgrade the geodatabase using the Upgrade Geodatabase tool.
  5. Use the Stage Utility Network tool and Apply Asset Package tool referencing the exported asset package.

After this process is completed the utility network is in an unversioned state. Post processing must be completed to register as versioned, enable the network topology, publish, and so forth.
