Enable hover pop-ups in ArcGIS StoryMaps

Summary

By default, to view an attribute of a feature in ArcGIS StoryMaps, the user must click on the feature and an attribute pop-up window shows the value. ArcGIS StoryMaps does not offer the 'hover over' functionality that automatically displays information in a map application.

However, the Media Map template offers the hover pop-up functionality in a map application, allowing users to view attributes by hovering the cursor over a feature. To configure this functionality in an existing ArcGIS StoryMaps application, users must create another map application using the Media Map template, and embed the map via URL into the ArcGIS StoryMaps application.

This article details the steps to embed a Media Map application to enable the hover pop-up capability in an ArcGIS StoryMaps application.

Procedure

Follow the steps in the workflow below to configure the hover pop-up functionality in ArcGIS StoryMaps.

1. Create a web app with the same web map used to create the ArcGIS StoryMaps application, using the Media Map template in ArcGIS Configurable Apps. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Create apps from maps for instructions.

2. In the app configuration window, under Express, click Step 2. About.
3. Enable the Enable hover pop-up option, and click Publish.

Note:
Floating hover pop-ups display the attribute window as a pop-up next to the feature. Fixed hover pop-ups display the attribute window in a specific location on the screen. Options include top-right, top-left, bottom-right, and bottom-left.

4. In the Publish dialog box, click Confirm.
5. Navigate to ArcGIS Online, and open the item details page of the newly created application. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Open the item details page for more information.
6. In the item details page, copy the application URL under URL.

Note:
Skip Steps 7 to 8 if ArcGIS StoryMaps is already in edit mode.

7. Open the existing ArcGIS StoryMaps application, and click More actions .
8. Click Edit story from the drop-down menu.

9. Click the Add content block option, and select Embed.

10. In the Add web content dialog box, paste the copied URL from Step 6 in the URL box, and click Add.
