There are several options by which to distribute data from ArcIMS.

Procedure

Select an option below.

  • Option 1. Use the Extract function in an HTML Viewer to extract vector data.

The Extract Server in ArcIMS can be used to extract features of specified layers of an Image Service into a set of shapefiles. Data can be extracted from shapefiles and ArcSDE vector layers. The data is saved independent of the ArcIMS server. Click on the link to get detailed instructions: Implement the extract function in HTML Viewer
  • Option 2. Use ArcMap to save vector data. This is not possible at version 9.2.

    1. Add an ArcIMS service to ArcMap through Add Data > GIS Servers.
    2. Right-click on the layer to be copied and click Selection > Select All.
    3. Right-click, with all features selected, the layer again and click Selection > Create Layer from Selected Features.
    4. Export the new layer using Data Export or if using a feature service select Data > Data Export, directly from the layer.

The data is saved independent of the ArcIMS server.
  • Option 3. Use ArcMap to save vector and raster data. This is not possible at version 9.2.

    1. Add a service to ArcMap.
    2. Select 'Save As Layer File', which can be opened again in ArcMap.

The data saved in the .lyr file is dependent on the ArcIMS service; it has to be up and running.
  • Option 4. Use ArcReader to save vector and raster data.

    1. Verify that the Publisher extension is installed for ArcGIS.
    2. Add the ArcIMS service to ArcMap.
    3. In ArcMap navigate to Tools > Extensions.
    4. Click, in the pop-up menu, the check box next to Publisher.
    5. Navigate to View > Toolbars and select Publisher.
    6. Select, from the Publisher toolbar, Publish Map and select an output .pmf file such as 'test.pmf'.
    7. Open the test.pmf in ArcReader.

The data saved in the .pmf file is dependent on the ArcIMS service; it has to be up and running.
  • Option 5. Use the Metadata Server.

It is possible to build a Metadata Server using ESRI technology to create downloadable data. Use this functionality with the Geography Network.

    1. Navigate to Geography Network.
    2. Select Content type, under the Explorer tab, for option two.
    3. Select the pulldown list and highlight Downloadable Data.
    4. Click Search. A new window with links to data displays.
    5. Click Link to Content. Follow instructions to download data.
