HOW TO

Create TIFF files that can be read by other software programs

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Many programs cannot read TIFF files that are created by ArcGIS 9.2 and later versions. This affects software that is not updated to the latest TIFF library, including ArcGIS Workstation and other third-party software.

With ArcGIS 10, there is now the option to choose to write out TIFF files as tiled (newer specification) or striped (older specification).

Procedure

It is possible to choose whether to save TIFF files as tiled or striped. By default, TIFF files are written out as tiles. To change the default to striped (in ArcGIS 10 or later), follow the steps below.

Note:
If using ArcGIS 9.2, 9.3, or 9.3.1, refer to the Esri Knowledge Base article in the Related Information below.

  1. In ArcMap or ArcCatalog, click Customize, and click ArcMap Options (or ArcCatalog Options).
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Raster tab.
  3. Uncheck the 'Create Tiled TIFF' check box.
  4. Click OK to save the new setting.
