HOW TO

Create polygons from a raster dataset based on the reclassified value

Last Published: June 9, 2023

Summary

In ArcGIS Pro, polygons can be generated from a raster dataset using the Raster to Polygon geoprocessing tool. However, the raster dataset must be reclassified as an integer type for the input raster parameter. This article provides the workflow to create polygons from a raster dataset based on the reclassified value, as demonstrated in the image below.

Procedure

  1. Open the project in ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Reclassify the values in the raster dataset using the Reclassify tool (Spatial Analyst Tools).
Note:
The Reclassify tool requires a Spatial Analyst or 3D Analyst license.
  1. In the Reclassify pane, for Input raster, select the raster layer from the drop-down list.
  2. For Reclassification, click the Classify option.
  3. In the Classify dialog box, for Method, select the preferred data classification method.
  4. For Classes, select the number of classes from the drop-down list.
  5. Click OK.
The Classify dialog box
  1. For Output raster, specify a location and name to export the reclassified raster. Click Run.
The Reclassify pane
  1. Convert the reclassified raster dataset to polygon features using the Raster to Polygon (Conversion Tools).
    1. In the Raster to Polygon pane, for Input raster, select the reclassified raster layer from the drop-down list.
    2. For Output polygon features, specify a location and name to export the feature class.
    3. Click Run.
The Raster to Polygon pane
  1. Symbolize the converted polygon features based on the grid code values.
    1. In the Contents pane, right-click the new polygon layer and click Symbology.
    2. In the Symbology pane, on the Primary symbology tab, select Unique Values.
    3. For Field 1, select gridcode from the drop-down list.
