Create and export a custom attribute file (.lxtca) using the LocateXT extension in ArcMap

Summary

Custom attribute files are used to define custom fields in the attribute table of an output feature class. Important information from the input files or text from documents are extracted and stored in the custom fields of the attribute tables.

This article provides instructions to create and export custom attributes using the LocateXT extension in ArcMap. The following image shows a text file to determine keywords to look for in documents.

Procedure

Note:
This workflow requires the ArcGIS LocateXT license. Refer to ArcGIS LocateXT: ArcGIS LocateXT Pricing for more information.

Create a custom attribute file (.lxtca) using the LocateXT extension in ArcMap

  1. In ArcMap, click Customize > Toolbars > ArcGIS LocateXT to activate the ArcGIS LocateXT extension.
  2. On the ArcGIS LocateXT toolbar, click the drop-down arrow and select Options.
  3. In the LocateXT Options dialog box, click Custom Attributes in the left pane. Click New to add new custom attributes.

  1. In the New Custom Attribute dialog box, type a desired name for the custom attribute in the Name text box. In this example, it is Site.

Note:
Alternatively, select the desired options from the Search and Matches drop-down lists.
The GIS Name and GIS Length (chars) text boxes are automatically filled after typing the name in the Name text box.
  1. In the Keyword list section, click New to add keywords.
Note:
Adding keywords enables the search for specific keywords in each document to populate the Name field.

  1. In the New Keyword dialog box, type the desired keywords in the Keyword text box and click OK. The created custom attribute is added to the Keyword list in the New Custom Attribute dialog box. In this example, it is San Diego.
Note:
Alternatively, select the desired option from the Capture Control drop-down list.

Note:
To add more keywords, repeat Steps 5 and 6.

The added attributes and keywords are displayed in the Custom Attributes pane in the LocateXT Options dialog box.

Export custom attributes files (.lxtca) using the LocateXT extension in ArcMap

  1. In the LocateXT Options dialog box, select the custom attributes. To do so, press and hold the Ctrl key, and click each of the custom attribute fields.

Note:
Alternatively, click and drag the cursor to select all the custom attributes by drawing a box around them.

  1. Click Export in the LocateXT Options dialog box to export the custom attribute fields.
  2. Click Save to save the .lxtca file in the desired location.
