HOW TO

Convert the elevation unit of a LAS dataset in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: November 23, 2023

Summary

When adding a LAS dataset to a map in ArcGIS Pro, it is important for the LAS dataset to have the same elevation unit as the map. This is to avoid the LAS dataset from displaying incorrect elevation values or overlaying at the wrong location on the map. The elevation of the LAS dataset can be converted in ArcGIS Pro using the LAS Dataset To Raster tool. However, the file format for the dataset is converted to a file geodatabase raster after the geoprocessing tool runs successfully.

The Z Factor parameter in the LAS Dataset To Raster tool is used to convert the dataset’s elevation unit to other units such as converting from feet to meter or vice versa. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: LAS Dataset To Raster function for more information.

For the example used in this article, the elevation unit selected for the LAS dataset is ‘Data source vertical unit’ which uses the measurement unit of ‘metre’, as indicated by the second image.

In the LAS dataset layer properties, on the Elevation tab, the elevation unit for the LAS dataset is displayed as 'Data source vertical unit'.

In the LAS dataset layer properties, on the Source tab, under Data Source, the vertical unit for the LAS Dataset is in metre.

Procedure

Follow the steps provided below to convert the elevation unit of the LAS dataset using the LAS Dataset To Raster tool in ArcGIS Pro. In the example below, the elevation unit of the LAS dataset is converted from meter to feet.

  1. Launch ArcGIS Pro, and open the project with an ArcGIS Desktop Standard or Advanced license.
  2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for the LAS Dataset To Raster tool. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Run a tool in the Geoprocessing pane for steps to do this.

In the Search box in the Geoprocessing pane, type LAS Dataset To Raster and click the first option.

  1. In the LAS Dataset To Raster tool pane, configure the Parameters tab as follows:
    1. Select the LAS dataset from the Input LAS Dataset drop-down list. In this example, LAS_Data is selected.
    2. Provide a name for Output Raster, and click the Browse…. icon to save the feature in the desired location.
    3. Specify the value for the Z Factor. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Output properties for more information. In this example, the Z Factor value is set to 3.28084 as the elevation unit is converted from meter to feet.
    4. Click Run. The new dataset created by the LAS Dataset To Raster tool is automatically added to the map.
In the LAS Dataset To Raster pane, there are two tabs which are Parameters and Environments where the user must fill in the Parameters for Input LAS Dataset, Output Raster, Z Factor and click Run.

The image below shows the vertical unit for the dataset is converted to feet in ArcGIS Pro.

In the raster layer properties, on the Source tab, under Data Source, the vertical unit for the file geodatabase raster is in foot us.
