HOW TO

Configure the Summagraphics Summagrid IV, 16-button digitizer

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Procedure

Summary

The following procedure lists the steps to configure a Sumagraphics Summagrid IV, 16-button digitizer.

Procedure

1. Set the dip-switches:

9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit; point mode; ASCII format; ACSII inches; no decimal; CR only; 1000 lpi. These settings emulate the Calcomp 9100 format.

The 'ON or 1' and 'OFF or O' dip-switch settings on the Summagrid IV can be confusing. The dip-switch is 'ON or 1' when the switch is towards the numbers. The dip-switch is 'OFF or O' when the switch is towards the OPEN label.

Bank A:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
on off off X off off on on

- 1 9600 baud
- 2 9600 baud
- 3 9600 baud
- 4 does not matter
- 5 no parity
- 6 1 stop bit
- 7 8 data bits
- 8 ASCII format

Bank B:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
off off off off off on on off
- 1 ASCII inches
- 2 no decimal
- 3 CR only
- 4 inches
- 5 1000 lpi/ 40 lpmm
- 6 1000 lpi/ 40 lmpp
- 7 calcomp 9100 format emulation
- 8 calcomp 9100 format emulation

Bank C:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
on off off off off ? ? ?

- 1 point mode
- 2 point mode
- 3 echo off
- 4 transmit only when in proximity
- 5 beeper disabled
- 6 application dependant <-- 6 indicates the digitizer's size
- 7 application dependant <-- 7 indicates the digitizer's size
- 8 application dependant <-- 8 indicates the digitizer's size

The appropriate digitizer board size settings for Switch Bank C, dip-switches 6, 7, and 8 are:

dip-switch 6 7 8
-------------------------
18" x 24" on on off
36" x 48" on off off
24" x 36" off on off
44" x 60" off off off

2. Create the following digform format file with any ASCII editor (DOS Edit, Notepad, WordPad):

'SGRID4' Summagraphics Summagrid IV
1 Digitizer device #
'(A3,2F5.3)' Digitizer format
F No menu bar
F Single button mode off
73.0, 1.0, 0.0 X max, x scale, x offset
85.0, 1.0, 0.0 Y max, y scale, y offset
12
'APD' 0, 'AP0' 1, 'AP1' 2, 'AP2' 3, 'AP4' 4, 'AP5' 5,
'AP6' 6, 'AP8' 7, 'AP9' 8, 'APA' 9, 'APC' 10, 'APE' 12

3. Save the file as SGRID4 and place it in the C:\ARCEXE\DIGFORMsub-directory.

4. Run CON-DIG at the Arc prompt like this:

CON-DIG SGRID4 x 9600 NONE 8 1
| | | | | |_ stop bits
| | | | |___ data bits
| | | |________ parity
| | |_____________ baud rate
| |_______________ port #
|______________________ format file

The DIGTEST (for DOS) or DIGTESTW (for Windows Extensions) utilities can now be run to ensure the digitizer is configured correctly.

Note:
This digitizer is only supported in the POINT MODE of operation. STREAM MODE operation is not supported.

A sample of the correct RAW DATA obtained in KERMIT or the 1st test in DIGTEST or DIGTESTW is:

APC1000218213 <-- 'A' button on the puck
