Summary
This article describes the workflow required to configure Utility Network tracing and make trace configurations available to web applications such as ArcGIS Map Viewer, ArcGIS Web Editor, ArcGIS Experience Builder, and ArcGIS Instant Apps.
Cause
- Users may be unable to find or use previously configured Utility Network trace configurations in ArcGIS Enterprise web applications (Map Viewer, Web Editor, Experience Builder, Instant Apps).
- This can occur when trace configurations are not published or shared after being created in ArcGIS Pro. The issue may also be observed following a Utility Network upgrade or migration (for example, from Utility Network version 5 to version 7), where trace configurations are no longer enabled for web sharing.
- Even though the trace configurations still exist in the Utility Network dataset, they must be explicitly configured and shared to become available in web applications.
Procedure
Prerequisites
Before configuring web-based tracing capabilities, ensure that:
- The Utility Network is stored in an enterprise geodatabase.
- Branch versioning is enabled.
- The Utility Network has been published to ArcGIS Enterprise.
- The published services include the Version Management and Validation capabilities where applicable.
For detailed publishing instructions, refer to the Utility Network publishing workflow documentation.
- Enable Branch Versioning
- Verify that the Utility Network and all required datasets are registered as branch versioned.
Note: Branch versioning is required for Utility Network web services and web-based tracing workflows.
- Publish the Utility Network
- Publish the Utility Network using a referenced data workflow.
Note: When publishing the services, ensure that the following capabilities are enabled:
- Version Management
- Validation (if validation attribute rules are present)
- After publishing, verify that the Utility Network services are available in ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Create a New Map Using Published Services
In ArcGIS Pro:
- Create a new map.
- Add the published Utility Network web services.
- Verify that the Utility Network layer is loaded from the published services rather than directly from the enterprise geodatabase.
Note: Published services are required for trace sharing and web consumption workflows.
- Create a Trace Configuration
Configure the desired network trace.
- Open the Add Trace Configuration geoprocessing tool.
- Create and save the trace configuration.
- Verify that the configuration appears in the Utility Network properties.
Note: Trace configurations define the behavior that will be exposed to web applications.
- Test Utility Network Tracing
- Open the Trace geoprocessing tool.
- Execute the desired trace operation.
- Verify that the results are returned as expected.
- Enable Trace Sharing
To make trace configurations available through web applications:
- Open theĀ Trace Options pane.
- Locate the trace configurations that should be shared.
- Enable the trace sharing option for each configuration.

Important:
Enabling this option exposes the trace configuration through the Utility Network service and makes it available to supported web applications.

- Verify Shared Trace Configurations.
Once trace sharing is enabled, the trace options pane displays:
- Shared trace configurations
- Associated network diagrams
- Available trace settings.
Note: Verify that the intended trace configurations are marked as shared.
- Publish a Web Map. Note: This final step is often overlooked.
After configuring trace sharing:
- Create or update a web map in ArcGIS Pro.
- Publish or overwrite the web map in ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Reference this web map from client applications.
Important:
Shared trace configurations are not automatically available to web applications until they are exposed through a web map.
Expected Result
After completing the workflow:
- Utility Network traces are available in ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Shared trace configurations can be consumed through web applications.
- Network diagrams can be accessed where applicable.
- Users can execute Utility Network traces from supported clients such as:
- ArcGIS Map Viewer
- ArcGIS Web Editor
- ArcGIS Experience Builder
- ArcGIS Instant Apps
