HOW TO

Configure a digitizer for use with ArcMap, ArcView and ArcInfo Workstation on the same machine

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Steps to configure a digitizer for ArcMap or ArcView and ArcInfo Workstation on the same machine.ArcMap and ArcView use the Wintab driver supplied by the digitizer vendor. ArcInfo Workstation uses its own I/O method that requires access to the COM port. The Wintab driver blocks ArcInfo's access to that port.

Procedure

  • For computers with two available COM ports, the Wintab driver must be configured to one port (example: COM1). This port must be used for digitizing with either ArcMap or ArcView. To digitize in ArcInfo Workstation, the physical connection of the digitizer adaptor must be changed to the other port (example: COM2).
  • For computers with a single COM port, the Wintab driver must be configured to that port. This port must be used for digitizing with either ArcMap or ArcView. To digitize in ArcInfo Workstation, disable the Wintab driver. Since disabling the Wintab driver may vary among different vendors, consult with the specific board manufacturer on how to do this.
