HOW TO

Change the context text for suggested places in the ArcGIS Field Maps layer search

Summary

In the Field Maps mobile app for ArcGIS Field Maps, the default search uses the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service. This allows searches for common geographies, addresses, and “places”.

Addresses are shown first, using a predictive method (i.e., search begins before finishing typing), as shown in the next image:

After clicking “Search”, additional “places” show up:

Often, users want to search for features within their own data. This can be configured by following the steps in this article: Problem: Unable to search for features in a map in ArcGIS Field Maps

The steps are intuitive, but the search text only shows certain data by default, for example, when searching for Los Angeles in the World Cities layer, it may be interesting to know in which continent the city is.

By default, only the city name is shown:

Procedure

To change the information shown in the text, change the expression in the “Title” section of the pop-up in Map Viewer. In this example, the population is included.

Save the map, then re-open it in Field Maps. Now, the search text includes the additional information from the pop-up:

the map now includes the additional information

The expression can be adjusted to include whatever information will be most helpful to see when searching for features in the layer.
