Change border colors for pseudocolor raster catalogs in ArcGIS

Instructions provided describe how to change border colors for pseudocolor raster catalogs in ArcGIS. ArcGIS 9.x and 10 raster catalogs have the ability to change renderers used for display. This document explains how to change colors for pseudocolor; or colormapped, rasters in a raster catalog. This is useful for removing the borders of USGS DRG catalogs and making them appear seamless.

Due to a known issue, ArcGIS 9.x and 10 pGDB Raster Catalog's unique value renderer behaves differently depending on whether the rasters in the catalog use .IMG or another file format. If the raster catalog being used for the procedure below is a pGDB, it must either be a managed raster catalog or an unmanaged raster catalog that references the .IMG files.

  1. Open ArcMap.
  2. Add a Raster Catalog.
  3. Right-click on the Raster Catalog and select 'Properties'.
  4. Select the 'Symbology' tab.
  5. Click 'Add' and select the Unique Values renderer from the list.
  6. Click 'Add' and then click 'Dismiss'.
  7. Select the Colormap renderer from the available renderers and click 'Remove'.
  8. Select the Unique Values renderer.
  9. Click 'Load Values'.
  10. Select a method to load values into the renderer. If there is uncertainty about the method to use, select 'All Rasters in Catalog'.
  11. Click 'Calculate'.

This may take some time. Do not click 'Stop'.

  12. Click the 'Add' button when it becomes enabled, and then click 'Close'.

The colors displayed are the default red color ramp. Ignore them. They are not used.

  13. Click 'OK'.
  14. Right-click on the Raster Catalog and select 'Properties'.
  15. Select the 'Symbology' tab.
  16. Double-click on the symbol for each of the border colors and select 'No Color'.
  17. Click 'OK'.

To use this renderer again, save it to a layer file. Otherwise, the default Colormap renderer is used the next time the catalog is loaded.
