HOW TO

Calculate route measures at each intersection in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: March 7, 2025

Summary

Route measurement at intersections improves route management, optimizes project planning, and enhances spatial analysis within an LRS network. This article provides the workflow to calculate route measures at each intersection in ArcGIS Pro.

Procedure

Note:
This workflow requires the ArcGIS Location Referencing (ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing or ArcGIS Roads and Highways) license.
  1. Open the ArcGIS Pro project with the LRS network.
Note:
For instructions to find and use the geoprocessing tool, refer to ArcGIS Pro: Find a geoprocessing tool.
  1. Create an intersection feature layer between the routes in the LRS network using the Create LRS Intersection tool. Ensure the same LRS network layer is used for Parent LRS Network and Intersecting Layers.
Note:
Ensure editor tracking is enabled for the LRS network layer to generate intersections across the time slices. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Enable editor tracking for instructions.
  1. Generate and update the intersection feature layer created in Step 2 using the Generate Intersections tool.
    1. In the Generate Intersections pane, for Intersection Feature Class, select the output from Step 2 in the drop-down list.
    2. For Network Layer, select the LRS network layer from the drop-down list.
    3. UncheckĀ Only use routes edited by current user.
    4. Click Run.
  2. Measure the route values at each intersection using theĀ Calculate Intersecting Route Measures tool.
    1. In the Calculate Intersecting Route Measures pane, for Intersection Feature Class, select the output in Step 3 from the drop-down list.
    2. For Output Dataset, specify a name and location.
    3. For Temporal View Date, set the filter routes to generate intersections based on the preferred date.
    4. Click Run.
