1. Stop the map service.
2. Delete the map service.
   
   

   Note:
   If the shapefiles are in use by other map services, those map services also need to be deleted before performing step 3.

   
   
3. Make the edits to the shapefile(s).
4. Re-add the map service.
5. Start the map service.
