HOW TO

Assign RGB values from imagery to overlaying LAS points in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: November 1, 2023

Summary

Applying colors and near-infrared values from imagery to LAS points provides an immersive, photorealistic display of the points. This article describes the steps to assign the RGB values from imagery to the overlaying LAS points using the Colorize LAS tool in ArcGIS Pro.

Procedure

Note:
To run the Colorize LAS tool, the imagery must have RGB information to assign to the LAS points.
  1. In ArcGIS Pro, add the imagery and overlaying LAS dataset to a project.
  2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and open the Colorize LAS tool.
    1. For Input LAS Dataset, select the LAS dataset to colorize.
    2. For Input Image, select the imagery to assign colors to the LAS points.
    3. Set the Band Assignment parameter if it does not auto-populate.
    4. For Target Folder, set a folder to locate the colorized LAS dataset.
    5. For Output LAS Dataset, set a name for the output colorized LAS dataset.
    6. Click Run. The colorized LAS dataset is added to the map.
The Colorize LAS tool is used to apply colors from imagery to LAS points based on the parameters set in the Colorize LAS geoprocessing pane.
  1. In the Contents pane, right-click the output LAS dataset layer, and click Symbology.
  2. In the Symbology pane, under Points, ensure the Draw using check box is checked, and select RGB in the drop-down list. The LAS points are assigned with colors from the imagery.
Th RGB option is selected to symbolize the LAS dataset points by RGB values assigned to each point if available.

The image below shows the 3D view of the colorized LAS points in an ArcGIS Pro scene.

The 3D view of the colorized LAS points shows green open areas and trees, and brown shades of vacant and hilly areas.
