Add or change ArcGIS functionality without editing the registry

Summary

You should not directly edit your Windows registry as doing so would pose a high risk on the integrity of your machine. You can modify many of ArcGIS options from the user interfaces for ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox and ArcScene. The few options not available from the interface can be modified by using the ArcMap Advanced Settings utility.
