Frequently asked question

How are heat maps different in Esri Maps for IBM Cognos 6.1 compared to earlier versions?

Last Published: April 26, 2020

The implementation and user experience of heat maps in Esri Maps for IBM Cognos has changed significantly in the 6.1 release.

A heat map in Esri Maps for IBM Cognos 6.1 is implemented as a renderer that users can apply to a layer. Heat map rendering is configured directly on the point layer and can be turned on and off as needed without removing a layer from the map. In earlier versions of the software, a separate heat map layer was generated and added to the map, and the generated heat map layer was configured separately from the point layer to which it was added.

Weighted measure heat map

A new type of heat map, based on numeric measure values in your data, can now be applied to a point layer in Esri Maps for IBM Cognos 6.1. A weighted measure heat map is calculated by weighting points using a specified measure such as revenue. Point density heat maps, which were supported in earlier versions of the software, are also available in version 6.1.

New algorithm

The heat map rendering algorithm has also changed from earlier versions. The renderer in Esri Maps for IBM Cognos 6.1 is based on the ArcGIS JavaScript API 3.14 heat map algorithm.

The result of the new algorithm is an improved look and feel for heat maps in version 6.1.

Heat maps in 6.1 have a default area of influence value of 10. Area of influence is similar to the intensity setting in earlier versions of the software. The area of influence can be adjusted by specifying a value between 1 and 30. A lower value makes the heat map clusters smaller and more distinct, while a higher value makes the clusters larger and smoother.

New and custom color schemes

Esri Maps for IBM Cognos 6.1 includes new and improved out-of-the-box color schemes for heat maps. In addition, custom color schemes can be created and made available to report authors and consumers in your organization.

Upgrade your heat map

In Esri Maps for IBM Cognos 6.1, when opening a map that contains a heat map layer configured in an earlier version of the software, the following occurs:

•The heat map layer appears on the map with the same color scheme that was previously configured.
•The new 6.1 heat map algorithm is applied to the heat map, giving it a new and improved look.
•If you change the color scheme, the original color scheme is lost, but it can be reapplied if implemented as a custom heat map color scheme.
