BUG

Federating ArcGIS Server with Portal for ArcGIS fails in Amazon Web Services when following the documentation workflow

Last Published: October 1, 2025

Description

When using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and attempting to federate ArcGIS Server with Portal for ArcGIS, the federation process fails if the steps in the documentation are followed explicitly.

Cause

Step 20 in the documentation to Deploy Portal for ArcGIS on AWS states that Portal's system properties must be updated to reflect the public DNS name. This change causes the federation to fail. At this time, there is not clear documentation of what this setting does.

Workaround

  1. When Step 20 is reached in the documentation workflow, skip it and proceed to Step 21.
  2. Once ArcGIS Server is federated successfully with Portal for ArcGIS, return to Step 20 and perform that step.
