PROBLEM

Features selected on a map are not selected in the attribute table in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: September 15, 2021

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, features on a map can be selected interactively. In some instances, selecting features on a map in ArcGIS Pro does not select features in the attribute table, as in the image below which shows two features selected on the map but no features selected in the attribute table.

Two features are selected on the map, but no features are selected in the attribute table.

In other instances, selecting features on a map in ArcGIS Pro selects only some features in the attribute table, as in the image below which shows three features selected on the map but only one feature selected in the attribute table.

Three features are selected on the map, but only one feature is selected in the attribute table.

Cause

The following are possible causes.

  • The attribute table does not display the layer containing the selected feature(s).
  • The selected feature(s) are from different layers. Features from different layers cannot be selected in the same attribute table.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, use one of the following workarounds to resolve the issue.

Ensure the attribute table containing the selected features is shown

Close the incorrect attribute table and open the correct attribute table containing the desired features.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, on the contextual Feature Layer tab, in the Selection group, click Clear to clear the feature selection on the map.
The Clear option clears the feature selection on the map.
  1. Click the Close icon on the attribute table to close the attribute table.
The Close icon on the attribute table enables closing the attribute table.
  1. In the Contents pane, right-click the layer containing the features to be selected. Select Attribute Table to show the layer's attribute table.
Right-clicking a layer in the Contents pane displays a drop-down list with the Attribute Table option to show the layer's attribute table.
  1. On the map, select the desired feature(s).

The image below shows two features from the example Market layer selected on the map and highlighted in the Market attribute table.

Two features from the Market layer are selected on the map and highlighted in the Market attribute table.

Make the layer containing the selected features the only selectable layer

Make the layer which contains the features to be selected the only selectable layer.

Note:
Repeat the steps below for each separate layer or feature class containing the desired features for selection.
  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 as described above.
  2. In the Contents pane, right-click the layer containing the desired features.
  3. Hover over Selection, and select Make this the only selectable layer.
Right-clicking a layer in the Contents pane displays a drop-down list with the 'Make this the only selectable layer' option to make the layer the only selectable layer.
  1. In the Contents pane, right-click the layer containing the desired features and select Attribute Table to show the layer's attribute table.
  2. On the map, select the desired feature(s).

The image below shows two of the three previously selected features highlighted on the map and in the example Market attribute table after disabling selection for the example Route layer.

Two of the three previously selected features are selected on the map and highlighted in the Market attribute table after making the Market layer the only selectable layer and disabling the Route layer for selection.
