Frequently asked question

Why do some maps based on ArcIMS image service layers print blocky, pixellated, or raster banded?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

Maps based on an ArcIMS image service request content from the server on export. This content is delivered in the form of a raster image. Due to the presence of this content in the map, other layers in the map may be rasterized at output. See the articles in the Related Information section below for more information.

In addition, if the output extents of the layer exceed the maximum output size of the ArcIMS service, the content may be delivered from the server at a resolution much lower than the export was requested at. This will result in degradation of the content in this layer.

Note:
The maximum output size of the ArcIMS service is set up by the server administrator, and as such can vary from server to server.
