Frequently asked question

Where is the metadata located in Esri Data & Maps 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

The metadata information for Esri Data & Maps can be found in several locations and formats. These formats and locations are described below.

The metadata in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) format can be accessed from any CD or DVD (CD 2 for the 2000 and 2002 releases) as help.htm. The metadata in HTML can be viewed in any HTML browser, and is provided for ArcView 3, MapObjects, and ArcIMS users.

Metadata is provided in the ArcGIS Desktop Help. Select ArcGIS Desktop Help from the Help menu. Then click the Contents tab and double-click the booklet entitled 'Esri Data & Maps'. Note: The metadata presented here is abridged.

The metadata can also be found as a file associated with each data set in Extensible Markup Language (XML). The metadata in XML can be viewed in ArcCatalog and with the ArcIMS Metadata Server.

Note:
The information provided in the ArcView GIS 3 Help Topics is outdated and does not describe the data sets in Esri Data & Maps 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
