Frequently asked question

How to determine the location of the source of a feature service from the service URL in ArcGIS Online?

Last Published: December 8, 2020

Answer

The service URL of a feature service in ArcGIS Online can reveal where the source of the feature service is stored and the type of service.

Hosted services in ArcGIS Online

Features services hosted in ArcGIS Online show 'hosted' on the item details page, and the service URL is displayed in the following format:

https://services.arcgis.com
Image showing the feature service is hosted and the URL is displayed

This also applies for feature services hosted in other ArcGIS Online organizations, or are copied and hosted in ArcGIS Online as part of a collaboration. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: About sharing feature layer and view data as copies for more information.

Stored services in ArcGIS Enterprise

Feature services stored in ArcGIS Enterprise and referenced or added to ArcGIS Online do not show 'hosted' on the item details page, and the service URL is displayed in the following format:

https://server.domain.com
Image of the hosted feature service and the service URL

This also applies to feature services referenced in ArcGIS Online as part of a collaboration. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: About sharing feature layers as a reference for more information.

Secured services in ArcGIS Online

When secured ArcGIS Enterprise services with stored credentials are added as an item to ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Online changes the display of the service URL to the following format so as to not expose the server:

https://utility.arcgis.com
Image of the URL as it appears in the server and the service URL in ArcGIS Online

Tile layers in ArcGIS Online

Tile layers hosted in ArcGIS Online display the service URL in the following format:

https://tiles.arcgis.com/
