A glossary of all the terms used in the Installation articles of ArcIMS.

aimsdefaults.properties
+ A file that contains all of the default site properties for an ArcIMS website.

ajp13
+ A protocol that Tomcat uses to communicate with web servers.

Apache
+ Name of a free Web Server, which is used to serve and maintain websites.

Applet
+ A program written in the JavaTM programming language that can be included in an HTML page, much in the same way an image is included.

ArcIMS
+ A GIS solution that allows you to centrally build and deliver maps, data, and tools over the Internet.

ArcIMS Application Server
+ Handles the distribution of incoming requests. It tracks which ArcIMS services are running on which ArcIMS Spatial servers and passes a request to the appropriate spatial server
ArcIMS Monitor
+ Tracks the state of the ArcIMS Spatial Server. Monitor restarts the ArcIMS services automatically by restarting the site configuration (stored in the sez files).

ArcIMS Tasker
+ Removes temporary image files generated by the Image services at a user-defined time interval.

CATALINA_HOME
+ The system environment variable that refers to the root location of a Tomcat 4.0.x installation.

Control Panel
+ Collection of tools used to change the appearance and functionality of the Windows operating system

dll
+ A dynamically linked library, a file that is need by Windows programs to extend functionality and perform tasks.

DNS Name
+ A name such as www.esri.com that is translated into an ip address which is used to specify a computer.

Environment variables
+ Used to associate drives, paths or files to symbolic names that can be recognized by Windows operating systems.

esrimap_prop
+ The configuration file for the ArcIMS servlet connector.

Host
+ A computer connected to a TCP/IP network including the Internet. Each host has a unique IP address.

Hostname
+ the real world name given to a host computer

HTTP
+ HyperText Transfer Protocol - a set of standards used by computers to transfer hypertext files (web pages) over the Internet.

HTTPS
+ Secure Hypertext Transport Protocol - See HTTP.

httpd.conf
+ The configuration file for the Apache Web server

IIS
+ Internet Information Server - A web server program that comes on Windows Machines, distributed by Microsoft

IIS Admin Service
+ Allows administration of Web and FTP services through the Internet Information Services snap-in.

iis_redirector.reg
+ A registry file used to enter the parameters stored in the worker and uriworkermap properties to the registry when configuring Tomcat with IIS.

IP address
+ A group of four numbers, separated by periods, used to identify a device connected to a TCP/IP network or the Internet (For example, 192.168.255.255)

iPlanet
+ A web server program, also referred to as Sun ONE (iPlanet), which is used to serve and maintain websites

isapi_redirect.dll
+ a dll used to redirect Java based requests to the appropriate Java Plug-In for Apache web server

isapi_redirector.dll
+ a dll used to redirect Java based requests to the appropriate Java Plug-In for IIS web server

Jakarta-Tomcat
+ Name of a free Servlet Engine which can also act as web server.

Java
+ An object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems.

JAVA_HOME
+ System Environment variable that needs to be set after installing J2SDK. References the installation directory of the J2SDK.

JavaScript
+ A scripting language used to add dynamic content to web sites using HTML source code. JavaScript is independent of the Java programming language.

Java Plug-in
+ Software application used to extend the functionality of a Web browser by allowing it to view Java-based applets.

J2SDK
+ Java Software Development Kit - A software development kit for creating and compiling Java programs

jk_nt_service.exe
+ The executable file that installs Jakarta-Tomcat servlet engine as a Windows service. Assoicated with the 3.2.X series of Jakarta-Tomcat.

JRE
+ Java Runtime Environment - An environment that executes Java programs

JRun
+ A Servlet Engine developed by Micromedia

Manager
+ A suite of web pages that is used to author map configuration files, publish and administer ArcIMS services and designing web pages. Manager resides on the Web server machine and can be accessed remotely.

Manager Applications
+ Refers to the standalone applications used to author map configuration files (Author), publish and administer ArcIMS services (Administrator) and designing web pages (Designer).

Microsoft JavaVM
+ Also referred to as the Java Virtual Machine.

mod_jk.dll
+ a dll used to

mod_jk.conf
+ The configuration file use to configure Tomcat 4.0.5 servlet engine with the Apache 2.0.43 web server.

nslookup
+ A program for determining which ip addresses a DNS name has been assigned.

NT
+ A Microsoft Windows operating system.

Oracle
+ The name of a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS).

output
+ Directory in ArcIMS that images get written to for display in a browser.

Perl
+ A programming language used to run scripts.

ping

+ A number that is used to specify direct communication with a specific network application.

Port 80
+ Default port that most web server programs run on.

Port 8080
+ Default port that Jakarta Tomcat runs on.

Redirector

registry
+ A database in Windows that stores all important settings for Windows and Windows programs.

Servlet Engine
+ Server-side applet used to extend Web servers with a common application programming interface (API) and allows them to process Java code.

Servlet Exec
+ Name of a Servlet Engine developed by New Atlanta

Service Administrator
+ Web-based administration application that allows users to manage ArcIMS and ArcSDE services remotely.

Services
+ A windows process that continuously runs in the background and performs a specified operation at predefined times or in response to certain events.

SnoopServlet
+ Test that you can run with Tomcat to determine if Tomcat and IIS are communicating with each other properly.

TCP/IP
+ Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol - the protocol governing communications between all computers on the Internet.

Tomcat
+ See "Jakarta-Tomcat".

TOMCAT_HOME
+ The system environment variable that refers to the root location of a Tomcat 3.2.x installation.

tomcat-apache.conf
+ The configuration file use to configure Tomcat 3.2.x servlet engines with the Apache 1.3.2x web server.

tomcatservice.exe
+ an executable file that installs Jakarta as a windows service

tomcat321service.bat
+ a batch file that installs Jakarta as a windows service

UNC Path
+ Refers to a path using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC). An example of a UNC path would be, \\<machinename>\ArcIMS\Output

uriworkermap.properties
+ Properties file containing parameters for configuring the Tomcat servlet engine with the IIS web server.

Virtual

Website
+ A site (location) on the World Wide Web.

WebLogic
+ An Web Enterprise software program developed by BEA Systems. It functions as a web server that does not require a servlet engine.

WebSphere
+ An Web Enterprise software program developed by IBM. It functions as a servlet engine and is used in conjunction with the HTTP server (included with WebSphere).

worker.properties
+ Properties file containing parameters for configuring the Tomcat servlet engine with the Apache web server.

workers.properties
+ Properties file containing parameters for configuring the Tomcat servlet engine with the IIS web server.

+ A Microsoft Windows operating system.
