Frequently asked question

Does Esri support 64-bit processors with ArcGIS 9.x products?

Answer

Support for 64-bit processors/operating systems
ArcGIS on Windows is supported on 64-bit processors starting with ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3 and higher. ArcGIS 10.0 on Windows is supported on 64-bit processors and operating systems. In addition to Windows, ArcReader Standalone is supported on a Solaris 64-bit environment running as a 32-bit application and on 64-bit Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4, RHEL 5 and SuSE 10.

At ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3, the supported 64-bit Windows operating systems are Windows XP 64-bit and Windows 2003 Server 64-bit. Windows Vista 64-bit support begins at ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 4.

The above ArcGIS 9.2 Service Packs run as 32-bit applications on these 64-bit Windows platforms, taking advantage of some of the performance benefits of the 64-bit environment.

Support also includes the ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3 or higher applications running on a 32-bit operating system, running on 64-bit hardware.

ArcGIS Desktop, ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView, and ArcReader on 64-bit
ArcGIS Desktop is a native 32-bit application and runs as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. In addition to Windows, ArcReader Standalone is supported on a Solaris 64-bit environment running as a 32-bit application. ArcReader 9.3 on 64-bit Linux is supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4.

ArcInfo Workstation on 64-bit
ArcInfo Workstation is a native 32-bit application and runs as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows.

ArcGIS Server and ArcIMS on 64-bit
ArcGIS Server for .NET and Java and ArcIMS are native 32-bit applications. They are both certified running as 32-bit applications on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. Web server support is based on the Web server vendor’s support of 64-bit Microsoft Windows. Check with the Web server vendor to determine if the Web server is supported on 64-bit Microsoft Windows. In addition to Windows, ArcGIS Server for Java and ArcIMS are supported on a 64-bit Solaris environment. ArcGIS Server for Java and ArcIMS are supported on a 64-bit Linux environment beginning at 9.3 Service Pack 1. ArcGIS Server for Java and ArcIMS are not supported on a 64-bit Linux environment prior to 9.3 Service Pack 1.

ArcGIS Engine on 64-bit
ArcGIS Engine is a native 32-bit application and is certified running as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. In addition to Windows, ArcGIS Engine is supported on a Solaris 64-bit environment running as a 32-bit application. ArcGIS Engine on 64-bit Linux is supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

ArcSDE on 64-bit
ArcSDE is available as a native 64-bit application for Sun Solaris (Oracle and DB2), HP HP-UX (Oracle and DB2), HP Tru64 (Oracle), HP-Itanium (Oracle), and IBM AIX (Oracle and DB2).

ArcSDE is also available as a native 64-bit application for SQL Server and Oracle on Windows and Oracle on Linux beginning with ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1.

Note:
DBMS support is based on the DBMS vendor’s support of 64-bit operating systems. Check with a DBMS vendor if the DBMS is supported on a specific 64-bit operating system.

For ArcSDE releases prior to 9.3 Service Pack 1, ArcSDE is a native 32-bit application certified to run as a 32-bit application on 64-bit Microsoft Windows.

In addition, prior releases of both ArcSDE for Oracle and DB2 run as 32-bit applications on 64-bit Linux, however ArcSDE for DB2 has not been tested on a 64-bit Linux environment.

ArcGIS 9.x License Manger
The copy protection mechanism for the ArcGIS Desktop 9.x Concurrent Use product lines including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcView Concurrent Use, and ArcInfo Workstation, has been upgraded to use the FLEXnet Publisher v11.4 software. The upgraded License Manager supports all previously released ArcGIS 9.x Desktop and ArcInfo Workstation software. Existing license files and hardware keys can be used with the new License Manager. This version of the License Manager supports 64-bit Windows Operating Systems. See the ArcGIS 9.x License Manager link below.

Intel and AMD processors
ArcGIS is supported on both the Intel and AMD 64-bit processor families, such as Xeon64 and AMD64, starting with ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3 and higher.
