Frequently asked question
No, ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online do not support password protection for individual web maps and web apps. Instead, access is controlled through organizational sharing settings, user roles, and item-level permissions. To restrict access to specific web maps or apps, use one of the following workarounds.
In the ArcGIS Enterprise portal or ArcGIS Online, create and share web maps or apps with the designated groups. When content is shared with a specific group, access is limited to group members, and additional access control is enforced through user roles and assigned privileges. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Share items with a group or ArcGIS Online: Share items with a group for more information.
Assign the Viewer role to users for read-only access to web maps and apps. This role provides secure access to view content without granting permissions to create, edit, or share items. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Configure member roles or ArcGIS Online: Configure member roles for instructions.
To keep the source data secure, create hosted feature layer views to display data in web maps and apps while maintaining edit access to the original hosted feature layer for authorized users. A hosted feature layer view is a separate item with independent settings and can be shared publicly or with restricted groups without exposing the editable source layer. Feature layer views support use cases such as restricting fields, filtering data, and enforcing read-only access. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Create hosted feature layer views or ArcGIS Online: Create hosted feature layer views for more information.
To prevent unauthorized data downloads, disable export options for hosted feature layers used in web maps or apps. On the item page, on the Settings tab, under Feature layer (hosted), disable Allow others to export to different formats and click Save.
