Frequently asked question

Can the sketch feature title in Map Viewer be used as labels in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise portal?

Last Published: February 6, 2025

Answer

No, sketch feature titles cannot be used as labels on a web map to annotate sketch features in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise portal. This is a known limitation for sketch layers, which are primarily used as manually drawn, temporary annotations. In cases where sketch features are used to highlight specific elements on the web map, adding annotations is an effective alternative to enhance visualization. This preserves the labeling properties of the underlying feature layers while simultaneously enhancing map interactivity.

As a workaround, use text sketch features to annotate the existing sketch features on the web map in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise portal.

  1. Open the web map with the sketch features in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portal.
  2. In Map Viewer, click Add on the Contents toolbar and select Create sketch layer to create a new sketch layer.
  3. Add annotations to the existing sketch features using the Text sketch tool. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Add text or ArcGIS Enterprise: Add Text for instructions.
