Frequently asked question

Can geometric network datasets be published to Portal for ArcGIS from ArcGIS Pro?

Last Published: June 20, 2024

Answer

No, it is not possible to publish geometric network datasets to Portal for ArcGIS from ArcGIS Pro, and this is expected behavior. Geometric network datasets can be published to Portal for ArcGIS only in ArcMap. Recent ArcGIS Pro tool updates include the utilization of a trace network instead of geometric. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Tools that are not available in ArcGIS Pro for additional information regarding tools no longer supported in ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS Pro can read and view geometric network datasets but cannot edit or publish them.

Alternatively, publish the geometric dataset as a trace network dataset or geoprocessing service to Portal for ArcGIS.

Publish the geometric network dataset as a trace network dataset

  1. Convert the geometric network dataset to a trace network dataset using the Convert Geometric Network To Trace Network (Trace Network) tool. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Supported geodatabases for instructions.
  2. Publish the trace network dataset. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Publish a trace network layer for information.

Publish the geometric network dataset as a geoprocessing service

  1. Save the geometric network dataset as a service definition (.sd) file. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Save a connected service definition for a geoprocessing service for instructions.
  2. Publish the .sd file to Portal for ArcGIS. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Publish a service definition for information.
