Last Published: April 25, 2020

Error Message

When performing an operation, such as a merge or union, with the output workspace set to a feature dataset, the following error message is displayed:

"Falls outside of output geometry domains"

There is an issue with the extent of the feature dataset that was created in a version of ArcGIS previous to version 9.2. The X, Y, Z or M values of the output feature class fall outside of the range specified in the feature dataset properties.

Solution or Workaround

When upgrading the geodatabase for use in ArcGIS 9.2 or later, upgrade the spatial reference of the feature datasets that are stored in the geodatabase.

  1. Start ArcCatalog and navigate to the geodatabase feature dataset in the catalog tree.
  2. Right-click on the feature dataset and select 'Upgrade Spatial Reference...'.
