ERROR

ArcGIS Server upgrade step 2 of 2 fails with error, "Refresh auto-deployed services during upgrade"

Last Published: March 11, 2026

Error Message

ArcGIS Server upgrade step 2 of 2: Failed. Refresh auto-deployed services during upgrade.

Cause

When upgrading to ArcGIS Server 11.5 from a previous release, the upgrade process may fail during the Continue Server Upgrade operation if the default arcgiscache directory has been removed. This prevents the system CachingTools.GPServer service from being refreshed during the upgrade process.

Solution or Workaround

To successfully complete the server upgrade, perform the following steps:

  1. Launch the ArcGIS Enterprise Patch Notification Tool and install the ArcGIS Server Security 2025 Upgrade 2 Patch.
  2. Open ArcGIS Server Manager and perform theĀ Continue Server Upgrade operation.
  3. Verify that the CachingTools.GPServer exists and is running from the System folder in ArcGIS Server Manager.
  4. Verify that the Caching tab is available when editing a map service and that caching status information is visible.
Note:
For a planned upgrade to ArcGIS Server 11.5 from an earlier release, follow the steps below.
  1. Install ArcGIS Server 11.5.
  2. After the setup completes, launch the ArcGIS Enterprise Patch Notification Tool and install the ArcGIS Server Security 2025 Upgrade 2 Patch.
  3. Perform the Continue Server Upgrade operation from the ArcGIS Server Manager.
  4. Verify that the CachingTools.GPServer exists and is running from the System folder in ArcGIS Manager.
  5. Verify that the caching status information is viewable from the caching tab of the edit service properties menu.
