Warning: ArcView cannot save or create this file

Error Message

Clicking the Make Default button on the Customize dialog box returns the following message.Warning: ArcView cannot save or create this file.

Cause

You don't have permissions to create a user default project.

Solution or Workaround

1. Determine how ArcView sees the $HOME directory.
   
   
   A. Open a new view.
   B. Select Add Theme from the View menu.
   C. Replace the path in the Directory field with the environment variable, for example $HOME
   D. Press the Enter key.
   
   The Directory field will now show the actual path.
   
   
2. Make sure you have write permission to the $HOME directory.
3. Examine the $HOME directory for a file named default.apr. Make sure this file is not write protected.
