Error Message

Attempts to add data from files to ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic fail, and return the following error message:

This dataset is too large to add directly to the map. Upgrade to an ArcGIS Online subscription to publish larger data as hosted layers.

Cause

The number of features in the dataset is larger than the feature limit, or the dataset file size is larger than the size limit. For more information on the limitations of each data type, refer to ArcGIS Online: My dataset is too large to add directly to the map.

Solution or Workaround

Note:
To perform the following workflow, sign in to an ArcGIS Online organizational account and ensure the user account has privileges to create content and publish hosted feature layers.

To resolve the issue, publish the data as a hosted feature layer to ArcGIS Online. Depending on the data type, refer to ArcGIS Online: Publish hosted feature layers for instructions.

Note:
After purchasing a license package such as ArcGIS for Personal Use or ArcGIS for Student Use for an ArcGIS Online organizational account subscription, the subscription must be activated. To activate the ArcGIS Online subscription, use the link in the 'Activating your ArcGIS Online Subscription' email. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Activate subscription for more information. Alternatively, obtain the subscription activation link from Esri Customer Service.
