Error Message

When signing in to ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise through ArcGIS Field Maps on an Android device, the process fails and returns the following error:

The server may not be responding or we encountered an unexpected error
The error message when attempting to sign in to ArcGIS Field Maps.

Cause

  • ArcGIS Field Maps may be corrupted and elements of the program broken, preventing it from running normally.
  • ArcGIS Field Maps is not registered as an application in ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • ArcGIS Field Maps is connected to a portal that uses Integrated Windows Authentication (IWA). IWA stops prompts for login, causing the app to fail to connect to the portal.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, the following workarounds are applicable.

Uninstall and reinstall ArcGIS Field Maps

  1. If there are unsaved edits, recover the offline edits. If not, move to Step 2. For detailed instructions to access offline edits from an Android device, refer to How To: Access offline edits from ArcGIS Field Maps directly from an Android device.
  2. Uninstall Field Maps from the device.
  3. Reinstall and start Field Maps on the device. It is now possible to sign in to Field Maps via ArcGIS Online.

Register ArcGIS Field Maps as an application in ArcGIS Enterprise

Add ArcGIS Field Maps as a registered application to ArcGIS Enterprise. Refer to How To: Add the ArcGIS Field Maps mobile app as a registered application to ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6.1 or newer for further instructions.

Change the portal authentication type

Change the portal authentication type to portal-tier authentication. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Portal-tier authentication for instructions and more information.
