Error Message

Logging in to Portal for ArcGIS returns the following error:

The number of user types assigned exceeds the number of user types available. Go to the Licenses tab for more details.

Cause

• The license of the existing user type has expired. The expiration date of the user type is found in the Portal Administrator Directory License page.

• The organization is utilizing a new license no longer containing the user type previously assigned to the portal members.

Solution or Workaround

Import a new portal license file in the portal

1. Create a new portal license file in the organization's My Esri with valid, non-expired user types. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Obtain a portal license file for further instructions.
2. Import the new portal license file in Portal for ArcGIS. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Import licenses for more information.

Note: 
If the organization utilizes ArcGIS Pro, configure the ArcGIS Pro named user license to log in to ArcGIS Pro with the new license. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Configure ArcGIS Pro licenses for your organization for further instructions.

Reassign the member with a valid user type

Change the user type of the member with a user type assigned to the license. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Change user types for further instructions.
