The error message "please ensure you have publisher or admin connection to standalone server" returned when publishing a map service

Cause

  • The ArcGIS Server credentials used when adding an ArcGIS Server connection does not have the Administrator or Publisher server roles when publishing the web service.
  • If the account does meet the role requirements, the connection type in the ArcGIS Server Connection Properties window is set to User Connection instead of Publisher Connection or Administrator Connection.

Solution or Workaround

Acquire the appropriate roles and privileges

In ArcGIS Server Manager, create and assign the Administrator or Publisher roles to the user account in the ArcGIS Server built-in store before attempting to publish a web service. Refer to ArcGIS Server: Add roles and ArcGIS Server: Manage users in Manager for instructions.

Set the connection type to Administrator or Publisher in ArcGIS Pro

Refer to ArcGIS Pro: View and modify server connection properties for instructions. In Step 2, change the connection type to Publisher Connection or Administrator Connection from the drop-down menu.
