• Joining a table to a shapefile, and opening the attribute table of the shapefile.
• Creating an XY event layer from a .dbf table, and opening the attribute table of the XY event layer.

Cause

The most common cause of this error is when the name of the object begins with a number, contains a space, or contains a special character. This includes:

• The name of the shapefile
• The name of the table
• A field name in a table
