Error Message

When adding a new subtype, the following error is returned:

Error:   
Failed to update domain. The domain field type does not match that of the field it is being assigned to. [Name of Feature or Object Class]
The error message may be appended with:
Error:   
Item not found in this collection.

Cause

One or more of the fields has an associated domain with a different field type. For example, the field is a Short Integer while the domain is a Long Integer. For more information on field types, refer to ArcMap: ArcGIS field data types.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Delete the domain or field. For deleting a domain, refer to ArcMap: Modifying and deleting attribute domains. For deleting a field, refer to ArcMap: Deleting fields.
  2. Recreate the domain or field to have the same field type. For creating a new domain, refer to ArcMap: Creating a new coded value domain. For adding a new field, refer to ArcMap: Adding fields.
