Last Published: March 31, 2021

Error Message

Attempting to upgrade a highly available Portal for ArcGIS deployment on the primary machine may fail, returning the error message:

Error:
Failed to import data to the content directory correctly. Unable to unzip portal content.

Cause

  • The Portal for ArcGIS Windows service account does not have full permissions to access the required directories.
  • Thumbs.db files exist in the Portal for ArcGIS content directory.
  • The standby Portal machine is running while upgrading the primary Portal machine.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve the issue, perform any of the following workarounds based on the cause.

Provide the Portal for ArcGIS Windows service account with the required permissions

For steps, refer to Error: The ArcGIS Server is not able to connect to the specified directory.

Remove all Thumbs.db files from the content directory

Navigate to the Portal for ArcGIS content directory, and remove any files named Thumbs.db. The default location for the content directory is:

C:\arcgisportal\content\items

Ensure the standby Portal machine is not running while upgrading the primary Portal machine

In some instances, upgrades to a highly available Portal for ArcGIS environment may be hindered by attempting to upgrade one Portal machine at a time. To circumvent this, ensure the standby machine is not running while upgrading the primary machine, or run the setup file on both Portal machines first, then start the upgrade process on either machine.

To upgrade a highly available Portal for ArcGIS deployment, refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Upgrade a highly available portal.
