Error Message

When adding an Excel (.xlsx) file in ArcGIS Online, the following error message is returned:

Cause

  • The Excel file contains duplicate field names.
  • There is an invalid locator in the ArcGIS Online organization geocoding service.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, use one of the options below to resolve the issue.

Rename or remove the duplicate field

Open the Excel file and identify the duplicate field names. Either change one of the field names to be a completely unique field name or remove one of the duplicate field if the values are also duplicated.

Delete the invalid locator in ArcGIS Online and use ArcGIS World Geocoding Service

  1. Log in to an ArcGIS Online organizational account.
  2. On the Organization tab, click Settings > Utility services.
  3. In the Geocoding section, navigate to the invalid locator and click More options More options icon., and click Delete.
  4. Use ArcGIS World Geocoding Service as the default locator.
    1. Click Add locator.
    2. In the Add Locator window, select From Existing Locator.
    3. In the Locator Item drop-down menu, select ArcGIS World Geocoding Service.
    4. Click Save.
