"Error opening feature class - The item does not have a definition" when adding a feature class in ArcMap 10.8.2

Error Message

A file geodatabase feature class created in ArcGIS Pro 3.5.x fails to open in ArcMap 10.8.2. and displays the following error :

Open Failed
Error opening feature class
The item does not have a definition. [fcl_name]

There is a warning message displayed as well:

Could not add the specified data object to the map.
The item does not have a definition. [fcl_name]"

Note:
ArcMap is in Mature support and will be retired March 1, 2026. There are no plans for future releases of ArcMap, and it is recommended that you migrate to ArcGIS Pro. See Migrate from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro for more information.

Cause

A new field with data type Big Integer was added to the feature class in ArcGIS Pro, which is not supported in ArcMap 10.8.2. Support for the Big Integer data type was introduced at ArcGIS Pro 3.2.

Solution or Workaround

Deleting the field solves the issue and the feature class can be opened successfully in ArcMap
