Error 1904: failed to register C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\gptinfunctions.dll

Error Message

The following error may occur when installing ArcGIS Desktop 9.0.

"Error 1904: failed to register C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\gptinfunctions.dll"

If installing on a computer with Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 2, disabling the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature, as discussed in ESRI Knowledge Base document 28065, does not resolve the issue.

Cause

This error may occur if a newer version of an ArcGIS Desktop feature is installed; for example: ArcReader 9.1.

Solution or Workaround

Uninstall the newer version feature before installing the older product.

For example, uninstall ArcReader 9.1 before installing ArcGIS Desktop 9.0.
