ERROR

Creating feature class failed

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Error Message

When attempting to publish a hosted feature layer (such as a new survey) to a portal, the following error is returned:

Error:
ERROR: Creating feature class failed.
Screenshot of the error when publishing a new survey in Survey123 Connect for ArcGIS.

Cause

The data store of the portal where the hosted feature layer is being published is in read-only mode. The data store is automatically set to read-only mode when the drive on which the data store is hosted has less than 1024 MB of available disk space. No hosted feature layers can be published to the portal if the data store is in read-only mode.

Note:
If this error is returned when publishing a new survey from Survey123 Connect for ArcGIS, an additional cause for the error is a known limitation on the size of the table supported on the portal. The portal supports tables with sizes up to a maximum of 500 columns. For more information, refer to Survey123 for ArcGIS: Portal errors.

Solution or Workaround

Set the data store to read-write mode. If the data store was set to read-only mode due to disk space, clear data on the drive that hosts the data store so that it is has more than 1024 MB, before setting it to read-write mode. To set the data machine to read-write mode, run the changedatastoremode utility. For more information on running the changedatastoremode utility, refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: changedatastoremode.

Note:
If the data store was set to read-only mode automatically, the automatic backup schedule is also disabled. Run the updatebackupschedule utility to re-establish automatic backups for the data store. For more information, refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: updatebackupschedule.
