Could not start the Geoprocessing Server Service

Error Message

When trying to start the GeoProcessing service form the services window you get:Could not start the Geoprocessing Server Service (esri_gpsvr) service on \\machine_name.
Error 2140: An internal Windows NT error occurred.

Cause

Two possible causes:

· The Installation process did not create the needed files and directories

· The permissions on files and folders used by the geoprocessing service are too restrictive.

Solution or Workaround

• Make sure the following directories exist under the arcexe80\gpserver directory:
  
  

     ¤  amls
     ¤  tmp_results 

  
  
  If these directories do not exist, create them using Windows Explorer, or with the MKDIR command from a DOS prompt.
  
  
• Make sure all users who need to use the service have full access to the
  above directories.
