Error: Could Not Find exit.col

Solution or Workaround

Summary

This error occurs when running the Understanding GIS introduction:

"Could not find exit.col"

The computer locks after this.

Cause

Wrong display driver. For example, the IBMVGA13.sys can cause this on some systems due to extremely large text in the graphics display mode.

If you add &echo &debug to ARCPLT.SML you will see 'Some of the popup window is off the CRT' at popup arcplot.mnu sml.

Solution

Change the driver to a different one. HRVGA.SYS - Everex Viewpoint usually works.
