Error: Cannot Re-Open SMT Alias File, Cannot Rename ARC File

Summary

ArcEdit fails during SAVE or QUIT with one of the following error messages:

Cannot re-open SMT alias
Bailing out of ARCEDIT...

or

FATAL ERROR
Can not rename ARC file
Bailing out of ARCEDIT...

Solution

Each INFO workspace contains an arc.dir file that can be acted on by only one user at a time. Even if two users are editing different coverages in the same workspace, if they access the arc.dir file simultaneously, a FATAL ERROR can occur. Therefore only one edit session per workspace is advised.

A second possibility is permission problems within the coverage and/or INFO directory. Check to make sure that user(s) in question have read and write permissions for all files in the coverage and INFO directories.
