ERROR

ArcGIS Snippet Finder causes System.UnauthorizedAccessException on Windows Vista

Error Message

Right-clicking in Visual Studio 2005 and selecting the ArcGIS Snippet Finder, when it is running on the Windows Vista operating system, returns a clsArcGISSnippetPreferences.SavePreferences dialog box with the following error message:

"System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ArcGISSnippetPreferences9.xml' is denied."

Cause

The IDE Integration feature of the ArcGIS Snippet Finder tool in the ArcGIS Desktop SDK and ArcGIS Engine SDK reads and writes to a preferences XML file on the local hard disk. If Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 is run without Administrator privileges, the local hard drive will not be able to be written to, therefore, resulting in the error dialog box.

Solution or Workaround

If an administrator login is available, use that account.

If only a limited user account is available but with administrator privileges, Visual Studio 2005 can be run as an administrator by performing the following steps:
  1. Click the Windows button.
  2. Navigate to the location of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 program.
  3. Right-click on the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 program icon. Select 'Run as administrator'.
